तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु

                                                                                                                    Let Our Learning Illuminate Us

                                                                                                                       Shri Shankar Shikshayatan

This stirring invocation from Kathopanishad is the motto which defines the moving spirit behind Shri Shankar Shikshayatan, a centre for vedic research.

Shri Shankar Shikshayatan was set up at the beginning of the millennium with the belief that the study of the Vedas, undertaken with humility and without prejudice, could advance the human quest to discover the truth of all truths and illuminate us with the profound meaning of life.

For thousands of years, the Vedas, the oldest repository of humankind’s understanding of the cosmic mysteries, remained buried in the dark recesses of time and history. It was only a little more than a hundred years ago that an exceptional scholar and teacher, Pandit Madhusudan Ojha, rescued these lost riches of humankind's attainments from the debris of ignorance, distortion and misrepresentation.

Years later, Pandit Ojha took Motilal Shastriji as his disciple and found him to be an illustrious student who would take forward this unparalleled work of rediscovering ancient truths. Both Pandit Madhusudan Ojha and Pandit Motilal Shastri wrote extensively on the wisdom contained in the Vedas with remarkable clarity and assurance. Shastriji, in turn, found in Rishi Kumar Mishra a gifted disciple and torch-bearer of Veda Vijnana. With Shastriji as his guru, Mishraji embraced this enchanting and exciting realm of profound knowledge articulated by the rishis in the Vedas.

Shri Shankar Shikshayatan embodies the true spirit, purpose and wisdom of the three Gurus and seeks to generate awareness about the invaluable treasures contained within the Vedas.

Through its various programmes and projects, the Shikshayatan hopes to re-ignite interest in the repository of wisdom contained in the Vedic texts and works of various scholars who, otherwise, have remained in the shadow of anonymity.

As a first step, the Shikshayatan has initiated a project to study and disseminate important works of Pandit Madhusudan Ojha, Pandit Motilal Shastri and Pandit Rishi Kumar Mishra. The institute is engaged in the translation of reference books and various works of Pandit Ojhaji and Pandit Shastriji.

The institute regularly organises talks, workshops and seminars on the writings of Pandit Madhusudan Ojha and Pandit Motilal Shastri. These meetings are held in Delhi and various other cities in the country, bringing together scholars and seekers to debate and disseminate Veda Vijnana (Vedic science) and its various constituents.

Some of the finest scholars on the subject have participated in these discussions, enabling an open and robust discourse on issues that are critical to the understanding of the Self and its place in the universe.

One of the principle objectives of the Shikshayatan in organising these meetings is to bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and modern outlook and thoughts. There is an urgent need to encourage the younger generation to connect with an amazing world of knowledge which at once challenges but also deepens in more ways than one our perception about the world we live in and the life we lead. The institute aims to achieve these objectives by organising its interactions and workshops in universities and educational institutions in different parts of the world.

To strengthen this endeavour, the institute partners with some of the well-known universities and institutions engaged in studying the Vedas and other ancient texts. These include Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Benares Hindu University, Varanasi, and Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth, New Delhi,

The annual Pandit Motilal Shastri Memorial Lecture, held in New Delhi, attracts significant number of students, teachers and other seekers of Veda Vijnana. The care taken to choose the themes for these lecture series reflects the institute’s commitment towards promoting and expanding the study of the Vedas as propounded by the three Gurus, especially Pandit Motilal Shastri.

Another annual feature of the institute has been the Pandit Madhusudan Ojha Memorial Dialogue organised in Varanasi. The themes discussed at these meetings included Sanskrit language and culture, Sanskrit and scientific terms.

The workshops organised by the institute in different cities have focussed on some of the key works of Pandit Madhusudan Ojha and Pandit Motilal Shastri. These included Sharirik Vigyan, Chand-samisksha and Brahm-vigyan.

The institute honours well-known teachers and scholars of Sanskrit and Vedic studies with Rishi Samman. Interested and qualified students, scholars and teachers are regularly offered research fellowships and scholarships on Vedic studies.

The institute has a rich collection of books, journals, papers and manuscripts on Vedic studies. Many research scholars from different parts of the country visit the library of the institute for undertaking research on various aspects of the Vedic thought. The institute also donates books to researchers, universities and Institutions.

The institute has a new home in the cyberspace at www.vediceye.org (www.shankarshikshayatan.org. Besides reaching out to a wider audience, both in India and abroad, the web presence is aimed principally to present easy access to the institute’s resources including publications, and enable scholars and other seekers to join Shri Shankar Shikshayatan on this journey of rediscovering ancient Vedic insights
