Vedic Concept of Man & Universe
English translation of Pandit Motilal Shastri’s Vyakhyana-panchakam (five discourses)
delivered at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi.
Translated by RISHI KUMAR MISHRA
Pandit Motilal Shastri was invited by India’s first President, Dr Rajendra Prasad, to give five discourses on vedic vijnana at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on December 14 to December 18, 1956. The lectures were attended by several well-known scholars and acharyas (teachers) of Veda-shastra.
Shastriji chose five themes for his discourses, focussing on distinct vidyas or knowledge systems, all of which offered a unique insight into the mysteries of Creation.
Much of his knowledge came to him at the feet of his guru, Pandit Madhusudan Ojha, a savant unique in his approach to Vedic studies and wisdom. Ojhaji dedicated most of his life in pursuit of vedic vijnana and wrote over 200 books, of which only a few were published. Shastriji was one of his several disciples but stood out for his sharp intellect and absolute dedication to the guru’s path of knowledge. He wrote over 80000 pages of commentaries and texts articulating Ojhaji’s insightful dissemination of vedic science. Only a few of his works, about 10000 pages, are available to us in the form of books. This makes the five lectures he delivered at the Rashtrapati Bhawan an important testimony to the storehouse of vedic knowledge which has shaped and embellished a nation of over one billion people.
A remarkable achievement of Pandit Madhusudan Ojha had been to postulate that without understanding the true meaning of vedic terms, it was not possible to know the profound knowledge contained in the Vedas. He spent years delving into different ancient texts, to unearth terms which had fallen into disuse through neglect and poor scholarship, find their meaning and present the knowledge contained in the vedic texts in its true form. Shastriji, and subsequently his disciple Rishi Kumar Mishra, who translated the Panch-Vyakhyan into English, continued the guru’s noble mission.
It is therefore not surprising that in these five discourses, Pandit Shastriji has expounded on select vedic terms to reflect upon their deeper meanings which illuminate the mysteries of Creation, and the universe.
In these five discourses, Shastriji has presented a kernel of Vedic wisdom, a tiny seed that contains the magnificent cosmic tree of creation.
