National Seminar on Shatapatha Brahmana Part VIII
Report A National Seminar was organised by the Shri Shankar Shikshayatan on Monday, 31 August 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. through an online platform. The seminar focused on the chapter entitled “Preparation of the Upavesha and Cooking of the Sacrificial Offering” (Upavesha Sampadana and Havih Paripaka) from Shatapatha Brahmana Vijnana Bhashya, authored by Pandit Motilal Shastri. The seminar was organised around various themes of the Shatapatha Brahmana, with particular attention to their interpretation and exposition in the Vijnana Bhashya. Prof. Devendra Prasad Mishra, Professor and Head, Department of Veda, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University, New Delhi, stated that an innovative interpretation of the statement “Pankto vai yajnah” is found in the Shatapatha Brahmana Vijnana Bhashya. The Year-long Sacrifice (Samvatsara Yajna) consists of five divisions: Agnihotra, Darshapurnamasa, Chaturmasya, Pashubandha, and Somayajna. These are also described in another form as Paka Yajna, Havir Yajna, Mahayajna, Atiyajna, and Shiroyajna. (Shatapatha Brahmana, p. 627) Prof. Yogendra Bhanu, Professor and Academic Dean, Maharaja Surajmal Brij University, Bharatpur, explained that the fire in which the sacrificial substance is cooked is spread with a wooden implement shaped like a hand. This wooden implement is called the Upavesha. Acharya Sayana, in his commentary on the Shatapatha Brahmana, explains it as the piece of wood used for spreading the burning embers: “Angara-vibhajanartham kastham upaveshah.” The ritvik or Agnidhra who performs the act of placing the vessel (kapala) recites the Yajurvedic mantra “Dhrishtir asi” while lifting the Upavesha. (Ibid., p. 619) Dr. Archana Kumari, Associate Professor, Department of Grammar, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University, New Delhi, stated that Soma is offered as an oblation into the fire. From the perspective of its seven forms, the statement “Saptasanstho vai Jyotishtomah” is used. These seven forms are Agnishtoma, Atyagnishtoma, Ukthya Soma, Shodashistoma, Atiratra Stoma, Vajapeya Stoma, and Aptoryama Stoma. She further explained that, corresponding to the seven forms of Agni, food (anna) is also described as being of seven kinds: “Yat saptannani tapasajanayat pita.” (Ibid., p. 629) Dr. Pawan Kumar Pandey, Assistant Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, explained that the Adhvaryu, while reciting the mantra “Dhishanam asi parvati prithvad ity as tvag vetu,” spreads the black antelope skin and places the drshat (grinding stone) upon it. The stone holds the grain that is to be ground and is therefore also referred to by the term Dhishana. Since it forms a part of a mountain, it is described as a fragment of a mountain and is designated Parvati in the Shatapatha Brahmana. (Ibid., p. 622) Prof. Santosh Kumar Shukla, Professor, Institute of Sanskrit and Ancient Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, presided over the programme. He explained that Agni is described in three forms: Amat, Kravyat, and Havyavat. The fire present within the body of a living being is called Amat; the fire that consumes a dead body is Kravyat; and the fire through which the gods receive the sacrificial offering is called Havyavat. He observed that the Hindi Vijnana Bhashya contains a wide range of subjects and emphasised the need to study it carefully and attentively. (Ibid., p. 640) Dr. Kamalraj Upadhyaya, Professor and Vedacharya, Shri Totadri Kamalanayan Veda Vidyalaya, Parkota, Anupshahr, Bulandshahr, rendered the Vedic Mangala-charana in traditional recitation. The programme was conducted by Dr. Lakshmi Kant Vimal, Research Officer, Shri Shankar Shikshayatan Vaidik Shodh Sansthan. The seminar witnessed enthusiastic participation from professors, research scholars, and scholars interested in Sanskrit learning from universities and colleges across several states. Their active participation contributed to the success of the seminar.

National Workshop on Pratyantaprasthana Mimamsa
Report A seven-day National Workshop was organised by the Shri Shankar Shikshayatan Vaidik Shodh Sansthan from 17 to 23 August 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., through an online platform. The workshop was based on Pratyantaprasthana Mimamsa, a significant work authored by Pandit Madhusudan Ojha. The work is a remarkable treasure of the Indian knowledge tradition. It examines the question of sea voyages and their relevance within the framework of the shastric tradition. It also demonstrates how a tradition of scriptural debate and reasoning has been systematically presented in textual form. Eminent scholars discussed this important subject over the course of seven days. Day One Prof. Meera Dwivedi, Professor, Department of Sanskrit, University of Delhi, delivered the opening lecture on the prescribed text. She explained that, according to certain ancient traditions, a person undertaking a sea voyage was considered to incur three kinds of sin: the sin arising from undertaking a sea voyage, the sin associated with travelling to distant lands, and the sin arising from contact with people of foreign lands. She observed that the ancient restriction on travelling to distant countries was primarily based on the consideration that a person might not be able to observe the prescribed code of conduct properly while living in another country. This forms one of the central issues examined in the text. Dr. Dhananjay Vasudev Dwivedi, Head, Department of Sanskrit, Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Ranchi, stated that the shastras prescribe purification or samskara for a person who visits Anga, Vanga or Kalinga. He discussed the context in which this statement has been cited as an authoritative source and examined whether such purification was required for everyone who travelled to these regions. The text discusses this question in detail in the context of sea voyages. Day Two Prof. Satyaprakash Dubey, former Dean of the Faculty of Arts and former Head of the Department of Sanskrit, Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur, explained that sea voyages could be undertaken for six different purposes: Dr. Yaduveer Swaroop Shastri, Assistant Professor, Department of Grammar, Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University, Darbhanga, discussed the approval and prohibition of sea voyages in different ages. He pointed out that sea voyages were undertaken even during the Dvapara Yuga, for which statements from the Puranas have been cited. The kings of Tamralipta, Karvata and Suhya are mentioned as having undertaken sea voyages. Even in the Kali Yuga, the great poet Kalidasa is said to have travelled to the court of Kumaradasa, the king of Singhala. Similarly, in the drama Ratnavali, the minister Yaugandharayana is described as having undertaken a sea voyage. None of these persons is said to have undergone any prescribed penance for doing so. Day Three Prof. Rajdhar Mishra, Professor, Department of Grammar, Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Rajasthan Sanskrit University, Jaipur, stated that six types of sea voyages are mentioned in the text. Among these is travel undertaken for pilgrimage. It is stated that a sea voyage to the city of Dvaraka for the darshana of Lord Krishna is entirely prescribed and commendable. He therefore raised the important question of how sea travel could at the same time be regarded as improper, and suggested that this apparent contradiction deserves careful examination by scholars. Prof. Harish, Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Kirori Mal College, New Delhi, observed that the prohibition of sea voyages is not presented uniformly in all contexts under the doctrine of Kalivarjya. In some passages, the prohibition is stated from a general perspective, whereas in others it is presented with reference to particular circumstances. These differing contexts give rise to questions that require further examination. Day Four Prof. Dharmadatta Chaturvedi, Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Faculty of Shabdavidya, Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Deemed University, Varanasi, while teaching the text, drew attention to an authoritative statement found in a Purana. The same statement is also found in an Upapurana. The discussion examined whether an Upapurana can possess the same degree of authority as a Purana and considered the issue from this perspective. Dr. Ayush Gupta, Assistant Professor, Department of Vedic Studies, Dr. Harisingh Gour Central University, Sagar, explained the significance of the word samudrayayi occurring in the text. He examined its possible meaning as well as that of the term samudraga. He explained that the suffix Nin conveys the sense of inherent disposition or habitual nature. Thus, one whose natural or habitual activity is to undertake sea voyages may be designated samudrayayi. The question of sea travel was therefore examined on the basis of grammatical analysis of the stem and suffix. Day Five Prof. Pankaj Kumar Vyas, Professor and Head, Department of Grammar, Rashtriya Sanskrit University, Tirupati, stated that in the Kali Yuga, a person who has undertaken a sea voyage is subject to a prohibition concerning the performance of his shraddha. However, a person who partakes of food at such a shraddha does not thereby incur any fault. The distinction between these two aspects was discussed in detail. Prof. Suman Kumar Jha, Professor and Head, Department of Sahitya, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University, New Delhi, explained that the subsequent interpretation is developed on the basis of the principle known as Durjananyaya. Just as, in ordinary discourse, the position of an opponent may first be provisionally accepted, so in shastric debate the purvapaksha is temporarily accepted before the siddhantin establishes his own position. In this section of the text, the purvapakshin accepts the statement of Manu and Marichi. The siddhantin then takes that statement as the basis for further reasoning. The conclusion established is that, according to Manu’s statement, the prohibition in the Kali Yuga applies specifically to the performance of shraddha in relation to a person who has undertaken a sea voyage, and not to sea travel in all circumstances. Day Six Prof. Maitrayee Kumari, Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Kamala Nehru College, New Delhi, stated that a person undertaking a sea voyage is, in certain contexts, prescribed a penance lasting three years. In some places, the performance of a samskara or purification is also discussed. She…
National Seminar on Shatapatha Brahmana: Purodasha-Sampadana- Series 7
Report Shri Shankar Shikshayatan Institute of Vedic Research organised a national online seminar on Friday, 31 July 2026. The seminar examined the chapter entitled “Purodasha-Sampadana Karma” from Shatapatha Brahmana Vijnana Bhashya, the celebrated commentary authored by Pandit Motilal Shastri. The seminar formed part of a continuing series devoted to the scientific and philosophical themes discussed in the Shatapatha Brahmana. Prof. Sundar Narayan Jha, Professor, Department of Veda, Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University, New Delhi, explained that Svayambhu, Parameshthi, the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth constitute the five fundamental principles responsible for the differentiation of creation. Among these, Svayambhu and Parameshthi possess an immortal (amrita) nature. The Sun embodies both immortal and mortal aspects, whereas the Moon and the Earth are characterized by the mortal aspect. r\Referring to the statement from the Shatapatha Brahmana: Tasmad yat kincha arvacinam adityat sarvam tan mrityuna aptam(“Therefore, whatever is posterior to the Sun is attained through mortality.”), He explained that the nature of the Earth and the Moon is determined on this basis, since both are later than the Sun. He further interpreted the mantra ‘निवेशयन् अमृतं न मर्त्यं च’-“Niveshayan amritam na martyam cha” to explain the dual nature of the Sun. (Shatapatha Brahmana, p. 540) Dr. Durga Sharan Rath, Assistant Professor, Department of Veda, Central Sanskrit University, Shri Raghunath Kirti Campus, observed that the commentary encompasses numerous philosophical themes. The present chapter particularly expounds the doctrine of Triadicism (Tritvavada). According to the principle: Trih satya va devatah (“The deities are threefold in truth.”), the doctrine of triadicity is established. The Rigveda, Samaveda, and Yajurveda constitute a triad. Likewise, the deities are arranged in triads, and even in traditional practice Vedic benedictions are recited three times. The Shatapatha Brahmana Vijnana Bhashya presents numerous illustrations of this principle, including: In all, the commentary discusses eight such examples in detail. (Shatapatha Brahmana, p. 511) Dr. Sudhakar Kumar Pandey, Assistant Professor, Department of Veda, Central Sanskrit University, Jaipur Campus, stated that the present chapter gives a significant exposition of Prajapati. Two forms of Prajapati are described in the context of the Black Antelope (Krishna Mriga): Satya Prajapati and Yajna Prajapati. Satya Prajapati represents the original or essential principle, while Yajna Prajapati represents the functional or derived principle. Satya Prajapati is the very foundation upon which the sacrifice (yajna) is established. (Shatapatha Brahmana, p. 467) Dr. Nishant Mishra, Assistant Professor, Department of Veda, Central Sanskrit University, Ekalavya Campus, explained that the entire universe is divided into five principal realms: Svayambhu as the first, Parameshthi as the second, the Sun as the third, the Moon as the fourth, and the Earth as the fifth. Owing to this fivefold division, the concept of Pancha-Pundira Prajapatya Balsha is described, one of whose branches begins with Svayambhu. Svayambhu and Parameshthi together constitute the Supreme Realm (Parama Dhama); the Sun is designated as the Middle Realm (Madhyama Dhama); while the Moon and the Earth together form the Lower Realm (Avara Dhama). (Shatapatha Brahmana, p. 572) The seminar commenced with the recitation of Vedic invocatory hymns by Dr. Amand Mishra, Assistant Professor, Department of Veda, Central Sanskrit University, Shri Raghunath Kirti Campus. The proceedings were conducted by Dr. Lakshmi Kant Vimal, Research Officer, Shri Shankar Shikshayatan Institute of Vedic Research. Faculty members, research scholars, and Sanskrit enthusiasts from universities and colleges across several states participated enthusiastically, contributing to the successful conduct of the seminar.

National Seminar on Shatapatha Brahmana–Part VI
Report Shri Shankar Shikshayatan Vedic Research Institute organizsd a National Online Seminar on Monday, 29 June 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The seminar focused on the chapter titled “Prokshana Karma” (The Rite of Ritual Sprinkling) from Pandit Motilal Shastri’s Shatapatha Brahmana Vijnana Bhashya. The seminar examined various philosophical and ritual aspects presented in this commentary on the Shatapatha Brahmana. Presentations Dr. Praveen Kumar Dwivedi, Assistant Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Prof. Rajendra Singh (Rajju Bhaiya) University, Prayagraj, explained that a narrow or limited outlook signifies constriction and is therefore regarded as the cause of suffering. Such a disposition is considered contrary to the spirit of the Yajna. To overcome this limitation, the sacrificer (Yajamana), while reciting the mantra “Devirapo…”, holds the ritual vessel in the left hand and performs the rite of ritual sprinkling (Prokshana) by raising it upward from the southern direction. He further explained that the water found on the earth is comparatively impure, whereas the water existing in the intermediate region (Antariksha), associated with Indra and infused with the solar life-force (Saura Prana), becomes purified through its association with Vayu (air). This interpretation does not imply that terrestrial water is entirely impure; rather, it emphasizes the superior purity of the celestial waters in relation to earthly water. During the sacrifice, water is lifted from the Prokshani vessel and used in the rite of ritual sprinkling. (Shatapatha Brahmana Vijnana Bhashya, p. 448.) Dr. Rajkishore Arya, Assistant Professor, Department of Samhita and Sanskrit, Faculty of Ayurveda, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, stated that the Avyaya Tattva (Immutable Principle) possesses five kalas (manifestations): Ananda (Bliss), Vijnana (Knowledge), Manas (Mind), Prana (Life-force), and Vak (Speech). Among these, Ananda and Vijnana unite with the mind to form Vidya (Knowledge), which is identified with Brahman. Conversely, Avidya (Ignorance) is identified with Karma (Action). The Avyaya Purusha is presented as the fundamental basis of creation. (Ibid., p. 407.) Dr. Neeraja Kumari, Assistant Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Mahant Darshan Das Mahila College, Muzaffarpur, Bihar, explained that the Shatapatha Brahmana Hindi Vijnana Bhashya interprets the five vital airs—Prana, Apana, Vyana, Samana, and Udana—from the perspective of Vedic ritual. Among these, Vyana, situated between Prana and Apana, is symbolically designated as Upanshu-Savana. Apana is identified with Antaryama, while Prana is called Upanshu. Upanshu-Savana is represented by a fixed stone. Prana and Apana are symbolically compared to two stones, and through their interaction, friction is produced upon the Vyana stone. Prana approaches from one side and Apana from the other, while the process of friction takes place at the centre upon Vyana. (Ibid., p. 431.) Dr. Prakash Ranjan Mishra, Assistant Professor, Department of Vedic Rituals and Purohitya, Shri Ramsundar Sanskrit Vidya Pratishthan Adarsh Sanskrit College, Darbhanga, explained that the rite of purification (Pavitrikarana) is performed to remove the demonic or impure tendencies (Asura-bhava) believed to have entered the sacrificial materials. A blade of Kusha grass is split into two parts by making a slit in its middle. The lower portion is called the root, while the upper portion forms the tip. Both portions are placed in the water contained in the Prokshani vessel, and this Kusha grass is used periodically for the rite of ritual sprinkling throughout the sacrifice. (Ibid., p. 428.) The seminar was chaired by Prof. Santosh Kumar Shukla, Professor, Institute of Sanskrit and Indic Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. In his presidential address, he explained that Yajnas are broadly classified into two principal categories: Vitana Yajna and Paka Yajna. The former is associated with the Shrauta sacrificial tradition, while the latter belongs to the Smarta tradition. The Grihya Sutras provide a detailed exposition of the Paka Yajnas. He further observed that the entire universe itself may be understood as a continuous Yajna. Nature constantly performs this cosmic sacrifice, and human beings, following the example of the gods, likewise perform their own sacrificial acts as participants in the universal order. Concluding Session The seminar commenced with the chanting of Vedic benedictions by Dr. Rajneesh Kumar Pandey, Assistant Professor, Department of Veda, Jaipur Campus, Central Sanskrit University. The proceedings were coordinated by Dr. Lakshmi Kant Vimal, Research Officer, Shri Shankar Shikshayatan Vedic Research Institute. The seminar witnessed enthusiastic participation from faculty members, research scholars, and students of Sanskrit from universities and colleges across several states of India. Their active participation contributed significantly to the success of the national seminar.
Seven-day National Workshop on Pitrasameeksha
Shri Shankar Shikshayatan Vedic Research Institute organised a seven-day National Online Workshop from 15–21 June 2026.The workshop was based on Pitrisameeksha, a treatise composed by Pandit Madhusudan Ojha, and explored its philosophical and scientific interpretation of the concept of the Pitrs (Ancestors). First Day Prof. Sadashiva Kumar Dwivedi, Senior Professor and Head, Department of Sanskrit, Faculty of Arts, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, delivered the inaugural lecture. He observed that Pitrisamiksha has great relevance in the modern age. During the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of the month of Ashvina, the annual Pitru Paksha is observed, when offerings (tarpana) are made to one’s ancestors. The scriptures prescribe Deva Tarpana, Rishi Tarpana, Gotra Tarpana, and other such rites. Referring to the text, he explained that the discussion begins with Prajapati and proceeds to define the nature of the Pitrs. Brahman is described as being of two kinds: Nirukta (manifest) and Anirukta (unmanifest). Nirukta is further classified into three forms: Vishva, Vishvatma, and Vishvatita. The universe created by Brahman is called Vishva; when Brahman enters that universe, it is known as Vishvatma; and that which transcends both is Vishvatita. Dr. Patanjali Kumar Pandey, Assistant Professor, Department of Veda, Maharshi Panini Sanskrit and Vedic University, Ujjain, explained the innovative interpretation of the word Yajus presented in the text. He noted that Yajus is analysed into two components: Yat, representing movement, and Ju, representing stability. In creation, the moving principle is Vayu (air), while the stable principle is Akasha (space). Speech (Vak) resides in space, whereas Vayu signifies life-force (Prana). Through the interaction of Vak and Prana, the structure of creation remains stable. Second Day Prof. Dharmadatta Chaturvedi, Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (Deemed University), Sarnath, Varanasi, described the work as immensely beneficial to society and emphasized the need for its wider dissemination. He explained that the life-force manifests in three forms: as the Rishi-Prana (Brahmic form), Deva-Prana (divine form), and Pitri-Prana (ancestral form). A proper understanding of the Pitri principle arises through the harmonious integration of these three forms of Prana. The two principles of Brahma Satya and Deva Satya together produce the twofold refinement (samskara) of living beings. Dr. Kuldeep Kumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala, presented a line-by-line reading of the text. He explained that Pitrisamiksha offers detailed interpretations of the concepts of Rta and Satya, both of which are equally significant and should not be viewed hierarchically. The Vishnu principle represents movement and brings Soma-like nourishment from the external world. The Indra principle signifies Prana and brings forth the inner fire residing within the living body. The locus where this process occurs is the Brahma principle, designated in the text by the term Pratishtha (foundation). Third Day Prof. Shyamdev Mishra, Professor, Department of Jyotisha, Central Sanskrit University, Lucknow Campus, explained that Agni, Yama, and Soma constitute the three divine Pitrs (Deva-Pitrs). All the gods originate from the Angira principle, which is inherently luminous; therefore, Agni is radiant in nature. Bhrigu, being associated with affection and essence, is identified with Soma. The state where neither brilliance nor affection exists is designated as the Yama principle. Thus, these three together constitute the three Pitrs. Prof. Shashikant Dwivedi, Professor, Department of Vedic Philosophy, Faculty of Sanskrit Learning and Dharma Studies, Banaras Hindu University, explained that Agni occupies the foremost position in the exposition of the Pitri principle. The intrinsic nature of Agni is expansion. Through Agni, energy extends from the heart, the central point, to the outer regions. Corresponding to the threefold Savana, Agni manifests in three forms: Agni, Vayu, and Aditya. In the evolutionary process, Agni represents the earliest stage, followed by Vayu, and finally Aditya, the most subtle and refined manifestation. Fourth Day Prof. Krishna Kant Jha, Head, Department of Sanskrit, Lalit Narayan Mithila University, Darbhanga, explained that the author interprets Yama on the basis of Prana. The word Vivasvan denotes the Sun, within whose life-force resides the Vishvamitra Prana. This Prana assumes the form of the Brhati metre and is identified with Indra. Consequently, Indra is also understood as Prana. The union of Vishvamitra Prana and Indra Prana gives rise to Manu Prana, and the Agni established within Manu Prana is called Yama. Dr. Ramchandra, Assistant Professor, Institute of Integrated and Honours Studies, Kurukshetra University, explained that when Agni moves from its place of origin together with Vayu in nature, it is called the Rta principle. The term Rtu is used for Agni in this context. Rta-Agni has ten forms: eight Dhishnya Agnis, together with Gayatra Agni and Savitra Agni, making ten manifestations in all. Fifth Day Dr. Kaushalendra Das, Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, Jagadguru Ramanandacharya Rajasthan Sanskrit University, Jaipur, explained that after the rite of Sapindikarana in the Shraddha ceremony, the Parvana rite is performed. In Indian tradition, Parvana is generally observed on the new moon (Amavasya), and householders also perform it during the Ardra constellation. The Parvana Pitrs occupy a position below the Nandimukha Pitrs and possess embodied forms. They are classified into four categories: Somapa, Havirbhuj, Ajyapa, and Sukalin, among which the Somapas are primarily referred to as the Parvana Pitrs. Prof. Shobha Mishra, Professor, Department of Sanskrit, Vikramajit Singh Sanatan Dharma College, Kanpur, delivered a lecture on Preta-Pitrs. She explained that after death, the individual soul leaves the earthly body and ascends to higher realms through a Gandharva body to the lunar world. Accordingly, the Preta-Pitrs are classified into three categories: Para, Madhyama, and Avara. The Nandimukha and Parvana Pretas belong to distinct levels, while the Avara are described as Ashrumukha. Sixth Day Dr. Arvind Kumar Tiwari, Lecturer, Adarsh Vedic Sanskrit Inter College, Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, explained that the Rtu-Pitrs and Divya-Pitrs generate the conscious human body. After experiencing the fruits of actions in higher realms, the individual soul returns from the world of enjoyment (Bhoga-loka) and, becoming a Karmatma-Bhutatma, moves through embodied existence. Prof. Saroj Kaushal, Former Head, Department of Sanskrit, Jai Narain Vyas University, Jodhpur, discussed the role of progeny in the doctrine…
